Types Of Dental Bearings

Long Life Series

  • 440 CVM Stainless Steel Bearing Balls

High Speed Dental Bearings are rated at ABEC 7 (P6) or better. Designed for dental handpiece use in repair and replacement applications, Torlon® retainers and Phenolic retainers are produced in a 7-ball or 8-ball compliment  design and vacuum packed with Klüberspeed BF 72-22. Angular Contact bearings use a full retainer design standard enclosing the balls completely. Ball roundness at Grade 3 or Grade 5. Rockwell Hardness: 55~57. Bright in color. Available in all bearing styles. Balls made in Kadoma, Japan by AKS (a subsidiary of NSK).

  • 440 N-DUR Stainless Steel Inner and Outer Races

Extreme corrosive resistant 440N-DUR was developed by Timken® Industries for the medical and dental fields. It offers improved carbide size and is a thoroughly through-hardened martensitic stainless steel ( > 60 HTC).  It's high hardness and structure give it a superior pitting potential and corrosion resistance much better than that of a standard 440C. Bright in Color. Raceway rings are matched to balls prior to assembly.

Ceramic and CareFree™ Extra-Life Series

  • Ceramic Si3N4

Ceramic dental bearings offer the highest performance and greatest return for your investment. Benefits include: Higher speeds that increase torque. Lighter ceramic can effectively restrain the centrifugal forces and increase output to 500,000 rpms. Ceramic has a higher hardness than steel meaning a more rigid structure allowing the ball to be ground to higher precision. A Longer life, due to the lower friction coefficient of ceramic, the need for constant lubrication is reduced. Ball skid on start-up and slow down is virtually eliminated protecting the raceway in the inner and outer rings. We use the superior full Silicon Nitride (Si3N4) vs. Zirconia to insure operation at higher temperatures. Used extensively throughout Japan and Europe and now available in North America. Balls produced in Canada or Japan, light grey in colour.

  • CareFree™ Ceramic Integral Shield

The newest technology available from Europe is full ceramic integral shields.  A full metal case encloses the rolling elements and ball retainer. and well suited for operating in low lube and no lube environments. All CareFree™ bearings bearing are supplied with Phenolic LE retainers vacuum packed with Klüberspeed BF 72-22 Grease. An excellent choice for extreme operating environments without regular lubrication. Rockwell Hardness: 65~70. Light grey coloured balls. Available in most models. Grade 3 Balls made in Juliar, CT USA.

Ball Retainers and Cages

Which Bearing Retainer Is Right For You?

  • PHENOLIC - EuroBearings

Phenolic Laminates for dental bearing applications are made by applying heat and pressure to convolute wound layers of linen cloth impregnated with synthetic thermosetting resins. When heat and pressure are applied to the layers, a chemical reaction (polymerization) transforms the separate layers into a single laminated material with a "e;set"e; shape that cannot be softened again. The new "e;L"e; and "e;LE"e; phenolics are used for retainer cages in high-humidity environments such as those found in steam autoclaves. Thephenolic retainer is submerged in a warm bath of synthetic ester and PAO lubricants.  After several hours the retainers are drained and dried.  During high speed operation, heat build up causes the lubricant to move from a solid to a liquid state. This keeps the rolling elements lubricated in environments where lubricant is scarce.  This type of retainer is used widely in Europe and referred to most commonly as "e;EuroBearings"e;. Their ability to retain and "e;wick up"e; lubricant  makes them especially desirable. Color varies from light brown to brown

  • POLYIMIDES

Polyimide, also known as PI, has been mass-produced since 1955. It is a general class of thermoplastic or thermoset polycondensate. It is an especially hard plastic with high impact and dielectric strength, high heat resistance (260°C continuous, up to 480°C intermittent), and a low coefficient of thermal expansion. Ease of machining and low cost of production make this type of retainer an excellent choice for disposable handpieces. Most commonly found and produced in Asia . Colors available are clear, yellow translucent, brown and gold.

  • TORLON®

Torlon® 4301 (Bearing Grade) PAI is primarily used for wear and friction parts. It offers a very low expansion rate, low coefficient of friction and exhibits little or no slip-stick in use. Torlon® 4301's flexural modulus of 1,000,000 psi is higher than most other advanced engineering plastics. This grade excels in severe service wear applications such as non-lubricated bearings and in high temprature environments.  DentalPartsHaus uses only machined Torlon® from rod stock and not a moulded form which suffers from weakness in thin sections and is prone to stress fractures. Torlon® is most commonly found in North America.

O-Ring Compounds

Choosing an o-ring compound that works for you

For as many different sizes and materials handpiece o-rings, you will find various opinions about which is best. For most people, it is a personal preference when choosing from the following selection of compounds.

  • Buna-N (H-NBR)(Hydrogenized)

This is the most widely used elastomer. Nitrile combines excellent resistance to pretroleum-based lubricants, silicone greases, water and alcohol. It has a good balance of such working properties as low compression set (great for Kavo style stepped bearings), high tensile strength and high abrasion resistance. Temperature range -40° to +250°F. In recent years a hydrogenized form of Nitrile (H-NBR) has been developed to extend the maximum temperature ceiling to 400°F.

  • Viton®

This compound combines high temperature toughness with wide chemical agent compatibility. This is a fluorocarbon product that performs well even in Chemiclave environments. Its absolute resistance to petroleum products and solvents make it a reasonable choice when the environment is an unknown. On the downside, it does not retain any lubricant and is less supple that other compounds of the same durometer.

  • Silicone

Especially resistant to high dry heat in primarily static applications (no contact with moving elements as in an outer raceway). Extremely supple and retains it's shape under stress. Not particularly resistant to tearing or splitting.

  • Flourosilicone

The best of both Viton® and Silicone combining properties of both. This material is well suited in dry, non-lubricant environments. A special quality is its ability to expand minutely over time. This expanding property compensates for bearing wear and looseness in maintainence free applications where handpieces are not normally lubricated.
